Julia's Visit and Catching Up with the Scott Hardy's

Richard's niece Julia Hardy Nielsen and her husband came to visit me the week before Christmas and invited me for Christmas dinner and then I got sick and was not able to go.

But I have enjoyed her two visits so much and have learned so much of what happened to their family after Richard died and I lost touch.

They will be retiring to St George in a couple years.

Jenny's husband is retired but they live here in Orem and she is doing real estate!!!

Matt and his family will be moving to Mapleton in a couple years.  He said they will be coming again in March and will visit me.

I read Alan's Stories from His Life and was so impressed by his life and family stories.  He said they would visit me when they come up to visit their children soon.

Lory died of cancer last year when she was 66.  So saddened to hear about that.
She was not aware until it was way too late to do much.  They had a home here and the ranch near Brianhead.  Julia said they had a huge family reunion at the ranch before Lory knew she was sick and everyone was there!!!

Becky gave a brief history of Vida and Merlin at the Earl Family Zoom meeting and that was excellent.  She has had an excellent career.

Merlin has done extremely well in building homes and complexes in Las Vegas!!!

So they all have done well financially.  She said none of them wanted to be poor again as they were after their Dad died when he and Miriam had only been married for 9 years!!!

Miriam went on after Scott died and got her degrees in music and teaching and taught music and home economics in the Las Vegas schools.  She kept all their propety in her name and gave it all to the children quite fairly.  They sold everything I believe.

Miriam did an excellent job of raising her family.  I remember she told me she only had two rules for her family...1-they go to church every Sunday and 2-They say their prayers every day.  It must have worked because they all have success and lovely families.  So fun to hear about them all.

Oh, and Julia brought the most wonderful Mint Truffles.  They are called Utah Mint Truffles and she buys them at Costco.  So good!!!

Glendive Home

Look closely at this picture of Gabby, Eric's wife.  She is eating at the Greenhouse across the street from where I used to live in Glendive.   At the top left of the picture the home in the background is where I lived from second grade until I left for college, Billings, and then San Diego.

The home was around 100 years old or less when we moved in.  It was heavily remodeled while I was at college.  It is being remodeled again I see.  Until we built a separate garage to the right corner of the house, the only garage was a very narrow under the house garage built for a horse and buggy.  There was only one bathroom and that was upstairs with a bathtub.  A bathroom with just a sink and toilet was added downstairs when I was in grade school.  A shower was eventually built in the basement where a bedroom was actually created for the boys, don't remember the dates.  I remember getting dressed for school huddling around the stove at the top of the stairs before remodeling anything.

Mom originally had a wringer washer in the basement where there was also two wind up Victrola's.  One was a tall standing one and the other more compact.

The house creeked.  Berta Mae and I used to play a game when she would come over to play and no one was home.  We would sit very quietly with no radio,  nothing on at all and just listen.  And we would soon get ourselves so spooked thinking about supposed ghosts and such we would have to run outside.  Berta Mae had a wonderful imagination and we were always playing fun adventures of one kind or another..  But that house had very spooky sounds if you listened.

The greenhouse was a real functioning greehouse with glass houses of plants and outside gardens.  The rhubarb grew on the edge of the road and we ate many of the stalks.  It has been converted into a restaurant and gift house now..

The trees by the house were not very tall when we lived there.

Obituary of Richard's brother Martin

Obituary

Martin Earl Hardy, of San Jose, California, passed away from natural causes on March 31, 2020.

The second of three sons, Martin was born to Vida (Earl) Hardy and Heber Merlin Hardy on April 3, 1927 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He became an Eagle Scout and participated in basketball and football at Las Vegas High School, winning state championships in both sports. After high school he enlisted in the Navy and became a naval Seaman in Monterey, California.

In 1946, Martin received a congressional appointment to the Naval Academy, graduating in 1950.  Soon after, he entered flight school and upon completion joined a jet squadron aboard the USS Valley Forge flying the F9F Panther, the Navy’s first carrier-based jet, in the Korean War.

For three years after the war Martin was a flight instructor in Pensacola, Florida.  There he met Kathryn who was serving in the US Navy WAVES.  They were married in Pensacola in 1957.

The Navy took them to Guam in 1959 where Martin performed missions flying the F8U-1P to various carriers operating in the Pacific. He then returned to the Naval Academy to teach Electrical Engineering for three years, followed by an assignment to squadron VRF-31 in Norfolk, Virginia where he became commanding officer in 1966.  He was then sent to Newport, Rhode Island where he graduated from the Naval War College with a MS in International Affairs. Based in San Diego, his last sea duty was in 1968 with Carrier Division One as the Air Operations Officer. His last shore assignment began in 1970 in Washington DC with Naval Air Systems Command.

Martin retired as a Commander USN in 1976, but continued working for the Navy. At night he attended George Washington University Law School and earned his JD degree. He passed the Virginia State Bar exam in 1979.

In 1991 he retired a second time and he and Kathryn moved to San Jose, California.  He became a regular at the local gym and continued his fitness routine until recently.  Martin’s most precious pastime was spending time with his wife and children. He loved the outdoors. He and Kathryn enjoyed exploring and hiking the California mountains and skiing with their family in Park City, Utah. Martin’s life was one of excellence, loyalty, courage, and service for others.

Martin is survived by his devoted wife of 62 years, Kathryn, and their five children, Susan Sutehall and husband John of Chicago, Illinois; James Hardy and wife Jin of Yorba Linda, California; Karen Stanford and husband John of Sugar Land, Texas; Mark Hardy and wife Kate of San Diego, California; and Anne Boris and husband Jon of Denver, Colorado, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Martin will be interred at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery in a private family service.  Memorial gifts may be made, if so desired, to the Sequoia Hospital Foundation in Redwood City, California.

Dorothy Ray Siddoway Anderson Passed Away September 20, 2019

Beloved wife, sister, aunt, cousin and friend Dorothy Anderson, passed away in Vernal, Utah at the age 91, on Friday, September 20, 2019.

Dorothy was born February 2, 1928, in Vernal, Utah to James Raymond and Ezma “Tess” Siddoway. She was born in the same home and same room as her daddy on North Vernal Avenue, weighing only 4 lbs. The home is still standing today. She was the oldest of three girls and a boy. When she was old enough to start school her parents moved to town and eventually they built a home next door to her grandparents William and Emily Siddoway where she spent many happy hours. She enjoyed high school dances. She especially enjoyed the dresses that were hand made for the Gold and Green Balls.

After high school, Dorothy attended Utah State Agricultural College (currently Utah State University) where she met her sweetheart David Anderson at a fraternity dance. They were married June 2, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple, with a reception in Vernal at Grandpa and Grandma Siddoway’s home. Following their wedding, Dave went to work for his Dad and Uncle Lorin in the mercantile business, in Homedale, Montana. Two years later, they moved to Miles City, Montana where Dave managed the Anderson’s store for the next 8 years. They lived above the store in an apartment during their time there, where Dorothy took great care in making it beautiful. Her favorite memories in Miles City were when her mom, Beverly, and Jim came to visit.

Dorothy loved dolls and started collecting them while in Miles City. Through the years her doll collection would grow to several hundred of every kind. At one point she owned every Madame Alexander doll ever made.

In 1958 they moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where they opened Ferrell’s Department Store. Dave’s Uncle Lorin had a building lot on Safstrom Ave were they built the only home they ever lived in. Dorothy took a lot of pride in making sure every detail of their home was just right.

In their early years in Idaho Falls, Dorothy and Dave would spend their time enjoying friends, family, the outdoors, and dancing. She was a Pink Lady at the L.D.S Hospital and then Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for 34 years and over 5000 hours.

It was during a Relief Society lesson when she was challenged to fill out her four-generation family chart, that her love and devotion to family history begun. Before she was through, she would create over 70 scrapbooks of family history. Dorothy was proud to be a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of Utah Pioneers and the Mayflower Society.

Dorothy and Dave took the opportunity to travel the world. They also loved to square dance and would often go with their square dancing group to exotic places throughout the world. They both enjoyed working in their beautiful yard and spent many hours together making it a beautiful, peaceful place. Anyone who visited their home and spent time in their yard would attest to the care, detail, and beauty of it. It wasn’t uncommon for them to plant up to 600 plants in one season.

Dorothy was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings including; Secretary in Relief Society, pianist in the M.I.A. and Relief Society, she was a visiting teacher for over 60 years, a Counselor in the Relief Society and both she and Dave were temple workers in the Idaho Falls Temple.

After Dave retired, Dorothy and Dave spent their winters in Mesa, Arizona. They enjoyed the warm weather, going to live performances, square dancing, and exploring the area. Dorothy enjoyed reading, shopping and would look for just the right gift for each family member for their birthdays, Christmas and other holidays. Dorothy was always well dressed, and loved shoes and jewelry. Every photo she was in she looked like a movie star. She was always gracious, always had a tissue in her pocket, always had her lipstick with her, and a small pillbox with Anacin in her purse. Together Dorothy and Dave loved life and lived it.

Family was very important to Dorothy and Dave, and they were constantly attending family reunions, visiting loved ones, and going to their homes, sharing thoughtful gifts and fun stories. She was fiercely loyal to family and friends.

Dorothy’s bond with her sisters Beverly and Marilyn was a bond that would last their entire lives. It was when Beverly passed away suddenly, that Dorothy’s health started to decline. Dave, her loving husband of 70 years, tenderly took care of Dorothy up until the last few days of his life.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her beloved husband David Anderson, her parents Raymond and Ezma “Tess ” Siddoway; her sisters Beverly Merkley and Marilyn Hacking; her in-laws Ferrell and Ethel Anderson; and nephews Tim Reynolds and Mike Murray.

Dorothy is survived by her brother Jim Siddoway; and by nieces and nephews; Wayne (Robyn) Merkley; Linda Murray; Terel (Julie) Merkley; Lisa (Steve) Evans; Jimmy Caldwell; Tara (David) Merkley; Lance (Charmian) Siddoway; Shauni (Mike) Young; J.D. Siddoway; and many great-nieces and nephews each loved dearly by Aunt Dorothy!

We would like to thank all of the family, friends, neighbors and all those at the care center who supported and loved Dorothy.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 2PM at the Maeser 2nd Ward LDS Chapel (2745 North 1500 West). A viewing for family and friends will be held Saturday 12:45-1:45PM at the Church. Interment will be in the Vernal Memorial Park. Jeanne Makes the Move!

Supposedly Jeanne is moving into Treeo on Center St in Orem today.  She changed her mind several times but I think once she realized Cathryn was not planning on staying she finally decided to go for sure.  She does not like living alone and she really does need someone there.  As she says, "I have perfect health from my nose down!"

The nice thing about Treeo is that the cost is month to month and so if you change your mind or want to go somewhere else, you can.

Marilyn says her room will be right next to Deloris--Deloris lived just down the street from us in Glendive and was in between Marilyn's and my age and we were all in the same group in high school but she was closer to Marilyn.  Plus they both did athletic things and had that in common.

Jeanne met Deloris over at Treeo when she was checking it out and she said, "Are you Deloris's mother?"--

According to Marilyn and Alice, Deloris is quite happy there.  For one thing she is getting better health care and realizes her situation was not quite as bad as she thought it was.  The other thing is she is not working the yard all the time and doesn't have those aches and pains so much.

I can understand how nice it will be to always have someone to talk to at meal time, if you want to. That is the way it was in SBA--even though you were alone in your room, you always had someone to chat with at meal time or work time.

I will be anxious to hear if she actually makes the move and how she likes it!!!

6 PM--Marilyn called Jeanne and confirmed she is in, She has her own phone with her regular number.  She just had supper downstairs with her friend Madeline and she is happy.

Christmas Texts and Calls, 2015

Loved getting texts and pictures on my Smart Phone, I have really appreciated that phone this year and thank to James and Camber so much for providing, I did not dream I would enjoy it so much.

It is easier for everyone to just text me a message and send quick pictures and now thanks to the Masseys I have finally learned how to talk on Hang Out and see them and talk.  So enjoyed talking while seeing Meagan and the baby, Keira, Matt and Eden.

Baby's full name is Nico Liam...I thought they would name him Liam, Matt's middle name, Granddad's name, I like it...Nico Liam. Meagan explained why Liam was middle and not first...Matt did not want it as a first name.

Anyway I sent a Christmas message from my phone with this pix and heard back from many.  Seems I am always away at Christmas but Marilyn and I enjoyed a lovely Christmas Eve dinner with Holly, such a lovely lady, granddaughter of Marilyn.  She works a few days a week as the Head Resident of a home for ladies from 18-29 recovering from addiction.  She explained her role and I can see why she would be very good at it though she is about the same age as some of them, I am sure.  Forgot to take her picture!!!

Some pictures I captured from phone and internet of Christmas Fun.  I am sure I will capture some more.

Miriam Lina Nelson

Miriam Hardy Nelson passed away today at 2 pm.  What a great life she lived.  After Richard and I married we visited Miriam and Scott in their home and she put on the most wonderful dinner amongst all those little children she was raising.  I was impressed.

When Scott died, she was pregnant with her 7th child Julie and I think Rebecca was only 9 or 10.  I remember when she told me about driving herself to the hospital alone to have her baby.  What a courageous woman she was.  Then she went on to finish college and become a Home Ec teacher at a high school.  She later received her Masters.  She could also sing and play the piano and always seemed to have a smile on her face. And yes, she was a great cook.

And she managed to raise 7 super children--how she did it, I will never know, but I do know she is a beloved mother of all her children and 29 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.  I remember once someone said she only had two rules at her house for the children.  They were always to say their prayers and go to church on Sunday. I am not sure that was the whole truth but it worked and somewhere in there she must have taught them all to work because they surely know how to do that.  A great lady, a great life and she has a well earned rest coming.

Matt, Jennie, Julie, Becky, Lory and Merlin and some of the spouses.

Alan and wife Elaine, he most have been the photographer in the other picture.

What a wonderful legacy for Miriam--plus all the grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Eric's New Pad

This is the interesting home that Carole's son Eric is buying in Glendive, Mt, my home town.  It was built to look like it belongs at Cape Cod or someplace like that.  It even has the Widows Walk where women looked for their husbands coming in from Sea.  I think it looks charming.  It is evidently a home he has loved from his youth.  And it looks out over the mighty Yellowstone River.  Hope it all turns out well!!

Alan and Elaine Hardy Visit

Richard's nephew Alan and his wife Elaine are taking the scenic route on a trip to Oregon and so stopped by my home for a night.  It was such a delightful visit with them.  They live in Boulder City and have another big home in Gunlock, where they have a huge garden and can and bottle foods and juices.  We stayed there once and what a wonderful place to gather family.

Elaine brought a jar of pomegranate jelly she had made and I finally had to get up in the middle of last night so I could have a toaster waffle and spread it with the jelly.  It was as delicious as I thought it would be.

One thing interesting is that Alan wanted a couple of head shots I had in Richard's Memory Book of Warren Hardy and Caroline Blake and I said I had just scanned them from another book.  I then asked him if he was into Family History and he said he was.  I suggested he come and look at the Family History books I had from his Grandma Vida and if he wanted any he could have them.  He had as much right to them as my children did.  He was so happy to find just the book he had been searching for and in fact he had prayed he could find a copy.  I am sure neither one of us had  anticipated such an event.  Prayers are answered.

Speaking of, I found my phone!!!  Last Tuesday I had carried my phone in a bag with a tin plate and utensils and a water bottle to a picnic in the Clear Creek Park with the RS Ladies.  The next morning I could not find my phone.  Of course, I went to the park and expected to find it under the picnic table I had sat at.  I could just imagine that it had tumbled out of my bag when I brought the bottle and utensils out of  my bag.  Alas, it was not there.  I sent emails and phone calls but no one had seen it.  I stopped the service and prayed I would find it.

Today I decided I better go in to Verizon when I went to Susanville for a Walmart run and see what my options were.  I took my old phone with me to see if it was able to work and have my numbers all transferred to it.  On the way to Westwood I noticed my Blue Tooth was reading my phone so I pulled over at the Clear Creek turnoff and did a more thorough search than I had already done three times before!!!  Lo and behold it was hiding in a nook and cranny behind the front seat.  I wish I had thought about that Blue Tooth before.  I would never make a very good detective!

Thinking back I realized what happened.  On the way to the park I had stopped to pick up Karen and while I waited for her I noticed my bag was full of water because my water bottle had turned over.  I took the bottle out and got out of the car with the bag to get the water out.  The phone must have tumbled out as I exited the car and I never noticed it was gone till the next morning.  I did search the car at least three times but it was in a weird spot and I missed it and the only time I had driven was when I was  showing Alan and Elaine around the Club and so I had not noticed that my Blue Tooth was on.  Whew!!

Richard Anderson Family on Facebook

My nephew Rod with sister Kathy (Bishop).  Rod passed away of a heart attack in his early 50's.

My oldest brother Dick (and Rod and Kathy's father) passed away of a heart conditions at 61. Dick was always a great support to me and my girl friends.  He gave us advice about our lipstick, heels, walking, clothes, etc. in a nice way.  I was still in high school when he graduated from BYU after being an Ensign in the Navy and bringing home a new bride, Mary.  Both Mary and Dick were always a very positive influence in my life. Mary lives in New Mexico.
