Sadie Has Rabies and Two Other Shots

For the Record

Sadie had her 3 yr Rabies Shot, one Year Bordetella and one Year DHPP today at the Oceanside Humane Society.  Will need to go there one year for new shots, also she got her l year license.  Can do walk-in or make appointment.  572 Airport Rd., Oceanside, CA  619 299 7012.   So much cheaper than going to the  Vet.

Sadie loves her bed and for some reason she often hangs her head all the way down to the floor.  I have not figured out the reason for that at all.  This picture does not show the nice white shag rug we now have which she loves to lay on also.

The sign behind her bed was made by a friend at Lake Almanor and hung from my address sign on Mountain Ridge.  The Great Escape was not describing my cabin but was describing the fact we had escaped from the city of San Diego, where we could not afford to live anymore anyway,  and were now living in beautiful Northern California top of the mountains by a gorgeous big lake!

Sadie, Sadie, Shady Lady

I finally had the mobile pet grooming come and do Sadie and I love the way she looks.  Someone recommended the schnauzer cut but I like the puppy cut.  Cameron took 2 1/2 hrs with her.  He said the older dogs he goes slower with and lets them rest.  She was very happy but tired.  He mentioned four different breeds he could see in her.  I think it took him longer because he was parked in front and others  asked him about his service and really liked what they saw with Sadie.  So, it was good for his business parking in front!!!  It is expensive though but a much better experience for her than sitting in a cage at the salons most of the day.  The Petco moved out of their Center St location which necessitated this.  And he said yes, she is getting grey!!!!  She is such a happy dog, she is a pleasure and she does not bark but knows how to let me know what she needs.  I think it is funny that people always call her puppy and want to pet her.

Sadie and Me

I tried to get a picture of us both but holding the camera and Sadie at the same time does not work.

And Here We Are Again

Since it has gotten colder, I brought the fur throw in our bedroom from the living room and Sadie is loving it and I love it, too.  She sleeps on top and hopefully to the side.  I sleep under it and I love coming to bed early and getting snuggled in, if I don't go to bed soon enough, Sadie goes without me.

Wedding Anniversary

This is my life, me and Sadie.  She just loves sitting in the sun, watching all the needles and leaves tumble to the ground.  For me, it will be clean-up time, soon.  Bags and bags of leaves and needles...how soon?  I did not do anything special for my anniversary.  Just remembering Richard and pray he is happy in heaven and has Bandido near.

Entertainment while in Carlsbad

This is often how we spent our time while Linda, Gary and Kelly were at work!  When I first arrived, Scout and Sadie were a little leary of each other.  When Scout got petted, Sadie got jealous.  But eventually they became great friends and I could walk them together without much trouble.  Scout is a very mellow dog but he barks when someone comes in the house that he does not know.  You can definitely tell that Sadie is an old lady and Scout is young and wants to play.  Love the dogs in my life.

Sadie

Sadie has just got to be the best dog in the world.  I have hardly had to use the leash at all when we are not walking.  She stays around the yard unless the people in back of me are out.  She does like to visit them as well as their dog.  Last week when I had to retrieve her so I could go to the movies she was not outside with their dog and the lady of the house, she was inside with the man of the house.

She loves to supervise my watering and gardening and she sits and watches and follows me from front to back.  I know it is a big temptation when dogs are walking by to go out and greet them but she has learned if I remind her to come back or just sit and watch, and even when little children are talking to her she will just sit and watch.  She is not a barker and sometimes she will just sit and wait for me to let her in without uttering a sound or occasionally give a little cough to let me know she is there.  She follows me from room to room and when I want to stay up in the living room for awhile even though it is her bedtime she hesitates to leave me unless I tell her it is OK to go to bed without me.  If she is napping and I settle down on the couch she is immediately there to sleep with me.  I don't know how she hears the slightest sound but she does.

I am sure she understands so many sentences and if not she will cock her head and just listen intently trying to understand what I am saying.  She always looks very sympathetically if I am sad.  I often toy with the idea of getting a kitten but somehow I just can't make that decision.  But I am so glad Sadie is in my life.

Alas, her groomer's phone is not working anymore, what to do, where to go...a bad groomer around here is not guaranteed by any means.

Strange Peskies

Seems each year there are peskies in the yard that I never see again.  One year it was all those moths. Last year it was the 100 year storm that had hail damaging everything and mud all over my patio.

This year it is the little burrs from weeds that stick to Sadie's hair.  I feel so badly when she tries to stay away from me because she doesn't like me to comb them out but they bother her, too, so it has to be done.

I am trying to think of something I could do to keep them from sticking to her underside and legs, not sure what.

Health Issues and Sadie is Groomed

Yesterday we took Sadie to be groomed and on the way I was telling Marilyn how I had fixed a hot lemonade/honey drink because of this darn sore throat I had and my mouth was really hurting.  It reminded me of when I had that yeast infection last summer and they put me on two bottles of $75 medicine!!!

She told me that the King Soopers next door to Pet Smart was the one that had a Clinic and so we should go.  It has been totally remodeled and had the big pharmacy next door.  Yes, they took Medicare and after a short wait I was ushered into a new med room that was very nice and the little gal took all my vitals.

Shortly a lady PA in her 60s or so came in with a young intern--they are a part of the University of Colorado.  He did the exam and she wrote everything in to the computer and gave him suggestions. They did a strep test as well, she was very thorough with the questions to help him.  I told them I had no med insurance and she gave me one $4 pill to replace the two bottles of $75 medicine I had last time!!!  She gave me a refill but doubted I would need it.  She also gave me $4 lidocaine for the mouth pain.  She also suggested to try Nasacort for my allergies which have been giving me such a bad time.  She said they are prescription dose but recently went over the counter.  I tried it last night and I am sold.  Anyway good medical experience.

They also gave me a complete printout of what they gave me and all my vitals.  Quite impressive.  I have scheduled appointments for carotid screening, dernatologist, urologist, and thoracic surgeon in San Diego so should have a good med update while in San Diego.

I have decided it is invaluable that I record this Med stuff, I went right to my blog in July and found exactly what medicine was given and what preceded it, could not remember on my own, of course.

Sadie is Looking Fine and Lily Time

Sadie gets groomed at "Kritter Klips" in Susanville and is looking so fine.  I should keep it up!  Last week when the Hardys were here there was this sticky sap coming down and Sadie would run off to play with her friends and come back with needles and dirt stuck to her, I gave her three baths so now she has to stay on her leash, at least until the sap is gone!

Love Lily time!

Who Doesn't Love Spring Snow?

Spring surprise this morning.  It will probably melt later today but so pretty right now.  Unfortunately my car looks the same way.  Since the garage door is broken the car is in the driveway.  Always something.

Sadie's new favorite spot is laying by the burning woodstove.  She is actually fascinated with the whole wood fire process and stands anxiously watching while the cold stove becomes a roaring fire.  I think we will run out of wood before we run out of winter we are burning so much.

Sadie just had a fun romp in the snow.  She quite loves it and with her red coat she is cozy warm.

Sadie Abandons Her House

I guess it is time, Sadie has earned the right to sleep with me.  She always tells me if she has to go outside.  She does not chew my shoes anymore,   She does not tear up the toilet paper.  She is just one smart dog with good manners.  This last week she has been sleeping on top of the covers but as close as she can get.  It kind of feels good to feel that solid warmth next to me.  She also likes to reach up and give a kiss on the cheek.  She is a sweetie.

The only time she runs to her house (7 ft kennel) is when she sees me reach for my purse.  She knows I am going in the car and she does not want to go!!!  She has always had a little problem with car sickness but I just took her with me to drive Sarah to school this morning and she was ok.

When I left Lake Almanor last month and drove through the canyon to Melissa's house she had thrown up all over my red quilt.  Of course, it is a winding road and she had eaten.  Secret to leaving for Lake Almanor from here on Sunday is "do not let Sadie eat anything before we leave".  I remember Bandido never wanted to eat while we traveled either, but she do like to go with me in the car everywhere I went.

Thank heaven for Sadie, she is the one constant love in my life.  Why can't we all be like dogs--so forgiving, so loving, so comforting, and when I talk to her she really tries to listen and understand.  She perks up her ear as if she really will understand me and looks me in the eyes, as if to say, I hear you, I'm here for you..  When she is hungry she gently taps me on the arm, when she wants to go outside she stands by the door.  I really should be more consistent about walking her, that is a good resolution for the New Year.

She did know how to sit and lie down and walk slowly beside me but I did not keep it up and now I will need to start all over if I want her to do the tricks.  She was also shaking hands fairly well.  Sweet Sadie, what a joy. she does want to please.

Today she wanted to go back to bed after I breakfasted and cleaned the kitchen and she stood poised in the hallway waiting for me, the way Bandido used to do.

Meet Sadie's Brother

On the day when I chose Sadie we also met her brother Snack.  This week one of the volunteers reached out for a picture of Sadie to send to Snack's parents and vice versa.  They looked totally different then and they still do.  Later this month Sadie is due for a grooming for a wire-haired dog so we will see how she looks then--right now she is quite a ragatag.

Sadie--the Halloween Dog

Today as I saw Sadie run across the street and down the hill I thought, "ok, no more roaming privileges for you."  She does love to run so I have been letting her out in the morning and late afternnon without a leash and she loves it.  Yesterday she chased a deer and there are not many cars around this time of year.  And then I thought, "What about when we were young, the dogs all ran free and we didn't worry about the cars, what is so different now?"

I don't know but I do think the dogs need to learn some things by themselves.  And just as I thought that I looked out back and there was Sadie sitting on her bed.  She did not run away, she did know her way home and she was ok.

She shows her feminine character occasionally.  She will not step on the piddle pad I keep in her cage.  She does not want to walk on it even it is clean.  She hems and haws until I pick it up and then she will go in to eat or out to play.

But she is still a puppy and cannot be trusted.  Today as I was sitting at my computer and I could hear her on the bed behind me, I thought, "oh, well, there is nothing there interesting for her to chew."

Wrong!!!  A minute later I noticed a lipstick was missing.  I had visions of red all over my new white carpet.

But she was playing with it on the blue towel I keep in front of the stove when I am making fires.  Luckily she hadn't been able to get the lipstick up, just chewed it closed...

Halloween she will be one year old.

Also I am wondering what to do about those 2 inch longer hairs that the other hair that stick up all over.  Should they be trimmed off or not?  Her hair is thin.  It dries very fast, very different than Bandido and it does shed a little but supposedly does not grow as Bandido's did.

What a Night!!

Wednesday night  I was feeling very badly about something but I finally got to sleep but woke up around 1:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep, so I decided to look at the package I had received of a gadget that would let me make my old VHS cassettes into movies to upload to You Tube.  The gadget cost  about $95 bucks or so.  I took it out and was reading the directions and put it on the bed with some other stuff and I would work on it tomorrow.  In the meantime I still could not sleep.  So I decided to print some things off I needed.

The printer jammed so I unjammed it and put it back together, in fact I did that about 5 times and it still didn’t work so I got out the book and disk and couldn’t find the help I needed so I went online and found some more help and worked for a long time on it but Sadie was crying so I stopped and let her out and she was antsy so I finally was going to let her outside but it was too late she had gone pooh by the door.  I carry the pooh back to the bathroom and flush the toilet and the toilet almost overflows so I take the lid off and hold it a bit and then go find my hanger to unclog it and flush it to work.  Finally get that to working.   I thought I had closed my bedroom door so Sadie could not get in there while I was in the office.  That is important as she cannot be trusted--she is still a puppy who likes to chew.

Then it is back to the printer to work on,  I am already thinking I will need to take it to Chico but how am I ever going to lift it to take it down the stairs???  Then I spy one more little piece of paper stuck in the roller.  After many tries I use a tweezers to get it out.  I put the printer all back together but I need more paper to see if it works. I keep it under the bed but it is so far back I can’t reach it so I go to get a broom.  And that is when I see Sadie.  She has gotten into my bedroom after all and out of all the things on my bed she chose the new gadget to chew on and ruin and there is $95 gone!!!!

After scolding her and putting her back in her cage and cleaning up her mess I finally get the paper out from under the bed and yea the printer works!

I have fixed the refrigerator, the dish washer and the disposal and now the printer by going on line and finding some instructions.  How did we ever live without the internet to tell us how to do everything?  Anyway it is now 3:45 in the morning.  Two hours of work and frustration...just one thing after another.  I finally got to sleep and slept in...luckily Sadie likes to sleep in, too.

Sadie and the Toilet Paper

I brought a package of toilet paper up from the garage and had taken one out and left the rest on the bed.  I had a letter to address and mail so I went into the office and then outside to the postbox.  I was busy for 6-8 minutes max.

I was schocked to find paper strewn throughout the house when I returned.  How she did all this into so many small pieces in such a short time is nothing more than amazing to me.

Of course, she got a real scolding, I was so upset with her.

Yet, the next day in a careless moment I left the tp on the bathroom rug instead of putting it in the holder and she did it all over again.....so fast.

Bad dog...bad Janet, pay attention to what you are doing, you have a beast in the house!

The Last of 100 Passions--AFI

I had eight on the list of 100 Passions (movies) from AFI that I had not seen.  I couldn't find five of them, but watched three the last few days.  The last one was a real doozy, from 1920, a Lillian Gish silent film.  It was 2 1/2 hrs long with a long cast of characters with a dramatic ending of the betrayed woman floating on a piece of ice toward the falls.  We have come a very long way in 100 years, not all of it good, but technology has certainly improved.

One was "Manhattan" with Diane Keaton, Woody Allen, and Meryl Streep when they were very young.  Richard and I had had to leave a drive-in Woody Allen movie very early, when the children were very young.  We had no idea what it was about, thought it was a comedy, and I have seen few or none since I don't think.  I especially liked seeing Meryl Streep with her long, long hair.  She was so beautiful.  Diane Keaton has definitely gotten better over the years.  Her hair was very kinky with a bad cut but she had pretty eyes.  Woody Allen doesn't change much over the years.  It was a typical Woody Allen film, however, and definitely not a favorite of mine.

I really enjoyed Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck in "The Lady Eve"--a comedy.  She was so pretty and charming and he was a handsome nerd, both very young.  Well done but they drew the story out much longer than they would today.

Yesterday I cleaned both living room rugs, it is so easy I have no idea why I do not do it more often.  I think I will try cleaning the couches one of these days.  Sadie had been peeing on the center rug and I was not aware of it--under the table!!!  I just don't understand her.  She is outside most of the time, she has a pad in her little home.  For some reason she does it when I am napping or working in the other room.  I think she needs a psychologist as well as retraining.  At least the carpets look and smell nice.  That is great and she can never be in there alone again!!!!!

Am I Trouble?

OK, so I went into my neighbor's house and ran around, it was a party, I love partes.
Ok, so I chewed another sandal, Sooo, you  put them on the floor, everything on the floor is mine.
I am just doing my job, being a puppy.  If you wanted someone who cleaned and put things away and stayed home, you should not have rescued me, I'm only Dog.

Today Sadie had a bath, her hair shines and she is feeling pretty.  How different her hair than Bandido's,  It dries fast and doesn't get matted.

Where's the Bark?

Sadie, Sadie, funny lady.  She just won't bark, why won't she bark and try and communicate with me?  She will whimper, sometimes, but not bark.  Like today, I forgot that I had let her out on her own for a bit and I shut the patio door and then proceeded to do some baking.  Eventually I realize she is not in the house and it is raining hard by now.  She is not standing by the back door, she is not barking, she is not in the back yard.  Where can she be?

I finally open the front door and there she is patiently waiting for me to let her in.  Why didn't she bark and let me know she was there?  I have only heard her bark a few times, like once at a deer when she was frightened,  She was put into foster care away from her mommy when she was just born, why did she never learn to communicate by barking?  Very strange.  When I would occasionally forget Bandido and leave him outside too long, he would run wildly around the room all the time scolding me with his bark, there was no mistaking what he was telling me.

It was a lovely rain today and quite a surprise.  Yesterday the temp was up to 95--it has never been that high in the whole 13 years I have been here.  That was very strange.  Anyway I love to hear the big thunder and they was a warning about lightening fires but so far, so good.

Every time I use that term, 'so far, so good'  I am reminded of that little girl who called 911 when her Daddy had a heart attack or something and the telephone lady was telling her what to do and asking her questions while the paramedics were enroute.  She was asked a question about the status of her Dad and she said, "So far, so good"--it sounded so strange coming out of that little girl, she must have heard her Mom say it many times.
